I’ve been very busy lately, I’m sorry to keep my Blog idle, just came back from Kota Kinabalu, actually I just have two days in Kuala Lumpur after return from My Photoshop Workshops in Kota Kinabalu on Monday 3rd of August before flying back to Kota Kinabalu again on Thursday  6th for another Photoshop Course organize by my department, it was a compulsory course for the staff in order to expand their knowledge about image editing. About the photo about, it got nothing to do with my new knowledge that I get from “The Government Compulsory Basic Photoshop Course”. I do the editing as usual, with my own style.

What they teach us during the “Photoshop Course” is how to make animation “bouncing ball” with Photoshop, how to make 3D with “Illustrator”, how to make your picture look like a sketch and how to make your “Type” look like a water drops. I don’t need that for my editing, I’m a photographer, all I need is to enhance my picture, to make good picture become great. Animation is not for me, just wasting my time and tax payers money, it was free course for me, that’s why.

My point is this, I hope my department will “Listen Extra Carefully”. Next time if you guys want us to join your “Compulsory Course”, please discuss with us, I’m talking about Photographers here. Only we the Photographers know what we want to learn, what we really need to know in order for us to perform better in doing our jobs, do we the photographers need to spent the whole days learning 3D when we rarely used it. 3D and Animation is not for Photojournalist Photographer, it is only for Animator. What’s is the point of learning the extra knowledge when we barely use it, I guess most of the participant will forget about the 3D by the time we step outside the class returning to our home.

Another thing is about using “Filters” in Photoshop, for me personally it’s a child play, go to filter menu and choose what kind of effect do you want, as simple as that. I’m not blaming the presenter, they have done their job according to what the “Secretariat” want the presenter to teach us and not what we really need to learn. Frankly speaking, the course is really a waste of “tax payers” money. Maybe some people will get benefit from it but I don’t think the course reach their objective.

One last word from me, to teach Photoshop for Photographers, one need a solid background in Photography or better if they are the passionate photographers themselves. If they just know photoshop, what photoshop can do, are very expert in Photoshop but have nothing in mind about the very basic needs of Photographers for Photoshop, then, we are just wasting our time. We are The Photographers in first place, we are not animator, we are not graphic designer, our needs is different. Extra knowledge without any practicality for our job is a waste.

People often ask me, how I did my black and white editing, actually that was not an easy answer for me, one thing that maybe most newbie doesn’t know is that, not every picture will look great when we convert it into black and white, there are a picture that work wonder in colors but will be lifeless if we convert it into black and white. One thing that we must keep in mind is that, whatever we do, I mean in term of photography and in this case portraiture, just keep it simple, background play a very important role here in order to make your subject stand out from the crowd.

I took this picture in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, she is not alone, in fact she is performing traditional Sarawak dance welcoming delegates from Commonwealth country for an Education conference. She perform her dance close to a large glass window that enable a bright natural light to shine through and I don’t need to use flash for this picture, the light is strong enough to lit the dancer. About the background, since I can’t move the dancer, so I need to position myself in order to get a nice background, actually the background is not totally black like what you saw here but very dimly lit, I take my exposure on her face, so the background will be underexpose for a few stops and with few blending mode in photoshop I manage to get a complete black background.

This is not photojournalism shot but a portraiture, I rarely edit my photojournalism shot, I mean my “Official Shot” but this is a fun shot so I can play around with it and I don’t want a clutter background to spoil her portrait, my editing here is quite simple actually, I just play with blending option until I get complete black background and finish. One thing that I think help to make this shot look great in a black and white is because her dress, very beautiful dress with texture and pattern. That is one of the secret for a successful black and white picture. Look for great source of lighting, a subject with texture and pattern and then explore it. Those things really can help our black and white picture look pleasant to the eyes.

One thing about her face, it is a combination of Red Channel and Green Channel, I combine them both, play with opacity a bit to get the result that I want. Very simple actually, I never use plug in, preset or action for my editing, all done from scratch, but most importantly is that photoshop for me is a tool to enhance a good picture, it is not a tool to repair or fix a bad picture. Get your picture right in the camera first, in term of composition, lighting, moment and everything else, get a nice shot and your editing will become easier and faster.

Classic…

I really enjoy any type of photography especially when it involve human, I like doing a portraiture shot, a pretty lady, baby or even an older person. This photo session actually was organize by friend of mine, he like to be called just CHOT, thanks a lot my friend for the invitation, even thought the light and weather was not very good for a photo shoot we did go through and make the best that we can do. It is a challenge when doing a photo shoot in the outdoor simply because we can’t predict the weather.

Most of people that I’ve photograph is not a professional model, they just a friends of another friends and get recommendation  from other friends as well. We just wan’t to have fun along the way, sharing our passion and also our knowledge with a newbie. I think we learn a lot by practicing on the field rather than just read a book or some online tutorial, it is not the same, reading and doing it practically. We are not taking picture of a building but a human who have an emotion to be taken into consideration and not to mention people along the way or along the road that just watch what we are doing, we must have a thick skin to do it in a very crowded area, we must be prepared to get on the ground, to get our hand, camera and our cloth collect dirt in order for us to get a great picture. Don’t bother with what other people are thinking, they just don’t know what we have captured with our awkward angle and positioning. Only the photographers know…
