Istanbul | Istiklal Caddesi

This is among my favorite picture of Istiklal Caddesi in Istanbul, there are a lot of peoples here, you really can get lost in time here, watching people doing their business along the street or simply watching people just enjoy walking here. Definitely this is a must visit place for any traveler or tourist who come and visit Istanbul apart from most common tourist attraction like Blue Mosque and Aya Sofya at Sultanahmet. People here really doesn’t bother so much of you taking picture of them, maybe most people here are so accustomed with photographers taking their picture, after all, this is among the most popular tourist attraction in Taksim Turkey.

About the editing, I use a light texture to et a vintage kind of feel here. If you like to know a bit about my processing, here it goes, first I do my editing as usual, adjusting colors and contrast, then I choose “Blue Channel”, Red, Green and Blue Channel give different kind of monochromatic image, so in this case I like to use Blue Channel, copy that Channel and paste it on top of the layer, and start working from it. Turn it into sepia image before adding texture. The original texture are a bit hard, I just want a lightly texture, so I play around with the opacity, I mean reduce a bit the opacity of the texture until satisfied. Here I use soft light blending mode, which is always my favorite blending option. So if you have the time, play around, give your picture some artistic touch into it. If you don’t like doing heavy editing, that was fine but for me I like to try new thing, I like my picture to have “feel” when people watch it.

I don’t called this editing as a “manipulation” but an “enhancement”, the story is still there, the people are real, I did not add or remove what’s being there or what’s not being there, well, maybe I add a “texture”, that’s it. Those thing does not in anyway change the content of the picture, the people, the activity and the surrounding, it’s just that with this kind of an “enhancement” you can “feel it”…

Istanbul | Turkey | Workstation

This is my temporary workstation while I was in Istanbul Turkey for my assignment covering our Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin during COMCEC Economic Conference in Istanbul Turkey. This is my room in Hilton Istanbul Turkey room number 92 located not very far away from busy area of Taksim. I was sleeping alone here even though there was two beds in the room. From this room I can see clearly a Bosphorus, watching a ship coming and going their business.

On this assignment I bring alone my own 15 inch MacBook Pro, my company doesn’t provide me with a laptop so I’ve to bring my own. For back up I bring along Laciew 250GB  and Seagate 500 GB mobile hard disk and most of my image were transferred to those two disk so I can sleep peacefully. There was an internet line in my room I don’t use it simply because I’ve to pay 48 Lira to use it, almost MYR 100 or almost USD 30 for 24 hours connection, since I don’t want to spent so much of my precious times on the net so the internet connection was not necessary to me.

To those of you who are planning to travel, for a holiday or for an assignment, please make sure you bring extra storage, to keep your picture safe, anything can happen and it is not a very good idea to have just one back up, take two so if anything happen to the other hard disk, you have another back up. External hard disk is very cheap nowadays but your picture is a lot more expensive than that, just imagine, traveling for thousands of a kilometer and suddenly when you reach home and trying to access your hard disk, become a nightmare, so don’t let this happen, take extra precaution.

Living Life To The Fullest

Since childhood I like to travel and one of the reason why I choose Photography as my career is because I Love To Travel, Photography is my first, second and third choice, in fact I don’t have any choice when it come to my career, I’ve already set my mind to become a photographer, I love being outdoors, and I hate “Office Life” 9 to 5 jobs is not for me, I know that some people love office life, enjoy office life but it’s not for me.

Being as a photographer doesn’t make me rich unless you are doing photography as a business, supply photography equipment but for me there is more in life than just being rich, have super fancy cars, living in the million dollar home and etc, etc. I want to have the world as my home, I want to be anywhere and I want to see the world as much as I can, everybody just have one life to live and I want to live my life to the fullest even though at one time I’ve nothing in my pockets but satisfaction in my heart. You may agree or not but after all it’s your life and “It’s My Life”…

Why? By James Richmond

“‘Why do you do it?’ friends often ask, perplexed,
Brows raised, minds sorely vexed.
‘The world out there is dangerous!
Aren’t you scared? Why do this?
You need steady work, a house, two cars!
You have only a motorbike, and sleep under stars!’

Dear friend, if you must ask, you cannot know
This curiosity that drives me so.
To you it is hidden; in me rises unbidden!
But one day the world I’ll have ridden
By iron steed, then perhaps this need
Will have vanished, finally vanquished!
That day will find me on deathbed,
With no regrets for the life I led.

Will you be able to say the same?
Or will you despair a life worn plain?

I will stake my Himalayan memories
Against your estate of a thousand trees.
Pit my Thai sunset
Against your private jet.
Weigh my horse rides at sunrise
To your Italian suits and ties.
I’ll rejoice in friends before I go,
Not the figures of my stock portfolio.

And, amazingly, there are more like me;
They reject slavery, and are truly free.
They took the chance we all had,
And honestly it makes me sad
That you didn’t.
You thought you couldn’t…
Live without the luxuries
Of all our modern amenities?
You choose the bonds of mortgage, but claim to be free,
Wasting a lifetime absorbed by TV.
Why watch it? but live it!
One life’s all you get!
Don’t put off ’til morrow and continue to borrow
The lives of strangers; ’tis the greatest of dangers
To the soul
Which grows old
Before its time.

Hercules, Columbus,
Guevara, Odysseus,
Champlain, Agamemnon,
The list goes on…
What have they in common?
Regardless man or god,
The soil of continents they trod,
Not in search of gold but adventure!
Not growing old ’cause they ventured
Far from safety; but far be it from me
To Judge…
The pitiless pity us
With souls black pitted.
Pray! save it for those less spirited.
For us… our horizons are unlimited.”

After a long break, finally I can update my blog, I was not that busy actually but I just got back my computer today 090909. Almost two weeks I’ve been without my laptop, have to send it for repair due to “Random Shutdown” syndrome, every now and then my laptop will shutdown without any warning, just randomly. I think lately Apple computer have a lot of problem or maybe I got a “bad” apple.

About the picture above, t was taken during welcoming ceremony of our 1st submarine KD Tunku Abdul Rahman at Port Klang Malaysia after 54 days of voyage from France to Malaysia. It was very long journey indeed. Our King was there to welcome our hero back home, they are lucky to be able to reach home safely and are are very happy knowing that they can celebrate Eid-uL Fitri with their family members. Actually we will have our second submarine next year, I mean they will arrive next year.

Enough about the story, I just want a quick and brief update of my blog just to let you guys know that I’m fine, it’s just that I can’t update my blog because my computer was having a problem and have to send it for repair. Thank you guys for taking your time to visit my blog, I really appreciated it.

His photographs had been and will be published more than a thousand times. Every time we celebrate the Independence Day, the media will publish all these pictures again and again. Business enterprises, large-format picture printers, photo treatment companies will repeatedly claim credits as well as reaping cash of the pictures they use but the original artist remains uncredited. ( Shutter2History )

I was very lucky to have met Malaysia great photographer Wong Swee Lin at his house, not many people here in Malaysia knew or have heard about him but to those who were born after our Independence Day 1957 sure enough have seen historical photograph taken by him, he have cover three Malaysia Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Razak and Tun Hussein Onn. As a Malaysia we truly appreciated what you have done for our country, without people like you we can only here about the story without any pictures to see.

I don’t want to write long story about Wong Swee Lin here because it was too long but if you are interested to know more about him, I suggest you visit HERE

Talking About Blogging

First of all I would like to apologize to all of you who keep coming here but upset with nothing new to read here, actually I was a little bit busy lately and to make the thing worse is that my Apple MacBook Pro crash on 30th June, as usual each time when I woke up in the morning I will turn on my computer to watch the news and browse randomly on the internet but on that day when I hit the power button on my Mac, nothing happen, just a small sound, very short one and that’s it. My MacBook Screen blank, I try few times but nothing happen and I gave up so I bring my Mac to Apple Centre and what a shock, they told me that My MacBook Pro Logic Board need a replacement and to make the matter worse, I don’t have Apple Care, so I need to pay a heavy price for new Logic Board.

I have a lot of stories to tell and to share but sometimes I just don’t have much times to wrote, my works keep me away, for those of you who just get to know me, let me tell you that I was working full time as a photographer for the Government of Malaysia but I don’t quite often post my official assignment picture here, I just don’t want you to get bored. As an official photographer for the Government of Malaysia I cover politic or politician a lot especially our Prime Minister, his deputy and other Minister and we also cover our King function.

But here on my blog I just like to share a lighter side of me, I need a break from too much politics and that’s why from time to time I go out and shoot something else like a beautiful lady. It was just for fun. I like to Blog but I just can’t update it quite often, I wish I can. I hope my picture will be the extension of what I’m trying to say. Picture above was taken by my friend at the Marriott Hotel in Santiago Chile, you can see clearly a reflection of the Andes Mountain on the glass, it is very beautiful indeed. My job sometimes take me away from my family and the only  thing that made me feel just like at home is because of technology called the internet. Almost everyday when I’ve free time, I will Skype with my family back home in Kuala Lumpur, time different between Santiago and Kuala Lumpur is twelve hours, very easy to remember, a  different night and day…

Education Is Your Greatest Investment

Saya menaip ni pun dah lewat tengah malam, HaiQal pun dah tidur. Ibunya pergi berkursus hampir seminggu di luar kawasan, so sementara dia pi berkursus ni, saya agak sibuk melayan HaiQal, hanya disebelah petang dan malam sahaja, setelah pulang dari bekerja, siang hari waktu bekerja, HaiQal di jaga oleh neneknya, ibu saya, rumah kali tak jauh dekat jer, so taklah jadi masalah sangat, cuma keletihan tu tetap terasa juga, bukan mengeluh ke apa, cuma berkongsi cerita, ada kalanya assignment saya meghiburkan dan ada kalanya agak membosankan, begitulah putaran kehidupan seorang jurufoto.

I like to cover this assignment, “Hari Keputeraan Agong” or King Birthday only held once a year here at Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur usually on the very first Saturday in the month of June. Another special occasion that took place here is Royal Flag Bearing Procession in conjunction with His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah (The King) Birthday Celebration. Very colorful event and what I like most about covering this historical event is that “The Man In Uniform” very nice to look at and will be a great photography subject. Malaysia is a very unique country, our King keep on changing every five years. You can get that information somewhere, it’s our constitution.

As usual this event took place on the early morning. Our King arrive at 8:00 am sharp, so we photographers must be here one hour earlier to secure our position. It is very crucial to get a very good vantage point. Even though we are official photographers or  press photographers, we are not provided with a special place. Usually they, the organizer will have a steps for us to position ourselves. This year there were none, we just like everybody else, the public, this is open place, we can choose our angle wherever we want but this is not good for us because we have to compete with the public, we are here to do our job, we are not here for a holiday so we should be provided with a better angle from the rest of the public because our picture will be  seen across the world so we need to show the best from our country and for our country.

Nevertheless, I still get a  good angle, next to me is Ahmad Yusni from EPA and next to him is Zainal ABD Halim from Reuters, so I’m in a very good company, three of us are using 300mm lens as our primary lens because the ceremony took place  a bit far across the field. This special event only last for one hour, by 9:00 am our King will leave this place and proceed to National Palace where another event will took place, it was very busy day for our King during his Birthday as a King. I took a lot of photos and feel free to visit my flickr for more pictures.
