  • Black and White | Bagaimana untuk menghasilkan Black and White yang mempunyai tone menarik.

HaiQal | Expressive Portraiture

Expression is something that make a portrait. Expression shows an individual his or her character or personality, expression can add mood to a picture, tears, smile, moody, bored, joy, all this kind of expression doesn’t need words to explain. Expressive portraiture will have an impact and usually timeless, most great portrait that are timeless is portrait with a very good expression and for sure it is not about smiling face. Have you remembered Afghan girl that grace National Geographic magazine front cover taken by legendary photographer Steve McCurry. Have you seen a portrait of famous Prime Minister of United Kingdom Winston Churchill taken by Yousuf Karsh a Canadian photographer. Those two pictures are among hundred of photograph that captured my heart, it is because of “Expression”.

HaiQal picture above is among few recent picture that I took and I’m quite happy with his expression, my son and like any kids or toddler doesn’t know how to pose, if you want to learn to shoot candid, you can start with your own child, they can’t stood still even for a moment. A lot of people think that my son know how to pose, in fact it is so hard nowadays to get a decent picture of my son. I can write a long story about my “adventure” of photographing my son but I think most people doesn’t have time to read, there are million of Blog about “How To take a Great Picture”. My secret is simple, it is something called “PASSION”. If you have it, everything will be easy. I don’t have a any formal training or education in photography and I learn photoshop all by myself, if Ican do it, so can you, all it take is passion and about a portrait, try to captured an “Expressive Portraiture” and you will enjoy and appreciate it for as long as you can.

Black and White | Colors

This is the result when I can’t decide which version to upload, most of the times when I do my editing I will also make black and white from any picture, just to know whether any particular picture will look good or not in monotone and most of the times too, both version are perfect to my satisfaction and yet very hard for me to pick one of them. I love texture and will always play with them, never get tired of it. At the beginning I’m not so good at it and when I see a beautiful texture picture on flickr, I try to figure it out how do they do that, I’ve no idea at all where to start and where to get all those texture.

I didn’t know then that we can buy “Texture” from the internet and some of them  are a bit pricey. Most of the textures that I use on my flickr are free, I mean I downloaded it from a free source and usually I combine few textures during my editing process. Texture is not an action, preset or plug in, textures are “Image” just like a picture. To use it we need to know how to blend them well with a picture, some will work effortlessly while others texture need few tweak just to make it happen, usually I desaturate the texture, change it to another colors to match my picture and if you guys notice, texture work great with mute colors, fade and vintage. Texture doesn’t look good on a high contrast image, but work wonder with mute or fade photograph, a simple way to get fade picture is to desaturate it or what I like to do is to get black and white image on top of color image and then lower the opacity of the black and white image, so I get mute colors.

Portrait of A Dancer

People often ask me, how I did my black and white editing, actually that was not an easy answer for me, one thing that maybe most newbie doesn’t know is that, not every picture will look great when we convert it into black and white, there are a picture that work wonder in colors but will be lifeless if we convert it into black and white. One thing that we must keep in mind is that, whatever we do, I mean in term of photography and in this case portraiture, just keep it simple, background play a very important role here in order to make your subject stand out from the crowd.

I took this picture in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, she is not alone, in fact she is performing traditional Sarawak dance welcoming delegates from Commonwealth country for an Education conference. She perform her dance close to a large glass window that enable a bright natural light to shine through and I don’t need to use flash for this picture, the light is strong enough to lit the dancer. About the background, since I can’t move the dancer, so I need to position myself in order to get a nice background, actually the background is not totally black like what you saw here but very dimly lit, I take my exposure on her face, so the background will be underexpose for a few stops and with few blending mode in photoshop I manage to get a complete black background.

This is not photojournalism shot but a portraiture, I rarely edit my photojournalism shot, I mean my “Official Shot” but this is a fun shot so I can play around with it and I don’t want a clutter background to spoil her portrait, my editing here is quite simple actually, I just play with blending option until I get complete black background and finish. One thing that I think help to make this shot look great in a black and white is because her dress, very beautiful dress with texture and pattern. That is one of the secret for a successful black and white picture. Look for great source of lighting, a subject with texture and pattern and then explore it. Those things really can help our black and white picture look pleasant to the eyes.

One thing about her face, it is a combination of Red Channel and Green Channel, I combine them both, play with opacity a bit to get the result that I want. Very simple actually, I never use plug in, preset or action for my editing, all done from scratch, but most importantly is that photoshop for me is a tool to enhance a good picture, it is not a tool to repair or fix a bad picture. Get your picture right in the camera first, in term of composition, lighting, moment and everything else, get a nice shot and your editing will become easier and faster.

Saya menaip ni pun dah lewat tengah malam, HaiQal pun dah tidur. Ibunya pergi berkursus hampir seminggu di luar kawasan, so sementara dia pi berkursus ni, saya agak sibuk melayan HaiQal, hanya disebelah petang dan malam sahaja, setelah pulang dari bekerja, siang hari waktu bekerja, HaiQal di jaga oleh neneknya, ibu saya, rumah kali tak jauh dekat jer, so taklah jadi masalah sangat, cuma keletihan tu tetap terasa juga, bukan mengeluh ke apa, cuma berkongsi cerita, ada kalanya assignment saya meghiburkan dan ada kalanya agak membosankan, begitulah putaran kehidupan seorang jurufoto.

Langkawi

I’m not a big fan of Langkawi, if not because of my last minute assignment I would not be here. Langkawi is a very beautiful island with white sandy beach and world class resort available here. Sitting next to me during my flight from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi is a couple from Middle East country, I don’t know which country exactly but judging from their dress, they must be come from rich oil country and I think they are newly wedd couple and I saw  a large group  Arab people in the plane also, they have a lot of money to spent and Langkawi is good for them, it is less noise and polluted compared to Kuala Lumpur, heavy with maddening traffic.

The other thing that I think Langkawi is good at is because Free Duty status, women like it, they like to go shopping here and Langkawi also favorite holiday destination among local people here in Malaysia, some come through the air and I think most people travel by the sea, I mean with boat from Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah. Photographer like me doesn’t enjoy much of what Langkawi has to offer, I’m not into nature photography business, I’m more into human, I like portraiture and I think, Langkawi doesn’t give me much option. If you are into nature and landscape photography, then Langkawi is your playing field with beautiful sunset and sunrise and also fantastic white sandy beach for you to explore.

Luckily my assignment wasn’t that boring, I got a chance to follow Malaysia Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin during his visit to Kilim Geoforest Park, it was a an experience for me and a group of another local media, we were provided with two boats to cover our DPM and the view along the river is fantastic, we can get really close to the eagle there but unfortunately during our visit there was not many eagle flying around, maybe they were too scared of out boats, few boat actually following our DPM.

From Kuah, it will take you less than half an hour to get here to Kilim Geoforest Park, I’m really sorry, I was a bit rush and forget to ask about the cost of the package, I mean island hopping package and also a trip to “Eagle Feeding” at Kilim river. I see a lot of tourist keep on coming ad go at Kilim jetty, from their face I think they really enjoy their trip, maybe they come from a place where they have never seen   Mangrove Forest. Our trip along the river plus small island hopping took us almost an hour and the last stop still at Kilim river where we have our lunch ready and the food was fantastic, well maybe because of the location, we have our lunch by the river, the sound of the forest really a music to our ears and really help us enjoy our food.

Assignment | Langkawi

I like to cover this assignment, “Hari Keputeraan Agong” or King Birthday only held once a year here at Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur usually on the very first Saturday in the month of June. Another special occasion that took place here is Royal Flag Bearing Procession in conjunction with His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah (The King) Birthday Celebration. Very colorful event and what I like most about covering this historical event is that “The Man In Uniform” very nice to look at and will be a great photography subject. Malaysia is a very unique country, our King keep on changing every five years. You can get that information somewhere, it’s our constitution.

As usual this event took place on the early morning. Our King arrive at 8:00 am sharp, so we photographers must be here one hour earlier to secure our position. It is very crucial to get a very good vantage point. Even though we are official photographers or  press photographers, we are not provided with a special place. Usually they, the organizer will have a steps for us to position ourselves. This year there were none, we just like everybody else, the public, this is open place, we can choose our angle wherever we want but this is not good for us because we have to compete with the public, we are here to do our job, we are not here for a holiday so we should be provided with a better angle from the rest of the public because our picture will be  seen across the world so we need to show the best from our country and for our country.

Nevertheless, I still get a  good angle, next to me is Ahmad Yusni from EPA and next to him is Zainal ABD Halim from Reuters, so I’m in a very good company, three of us are using 300mm lens as our primary lens because the ceremony took place  a bit far across the field. This special event only last for one hour, by 9:00 am our King will leave this place and proceed to National Palace where another event will took place, it was very busy day for our King during his Birthday as a King. I took a lot of photos and feel free to visit my flickr for more pictures.
